The British Virgin Islands are steeped in pirate history. Many famous names including Blackbeard, Sir Francis Drake and Jack Hawkins used the Virgin Islands as a staging ground for attacks on vessels laden with treasure (booty) headed back to Europe. All seafarers knew that the Virgin Islands boasted some of the most secure but unattended harbors in the West Indies. As a result, legendary pirate dens were established. One of the most notable dens was the Bight at Norman Island. Robert Louis Stevenson brought notoriety to this island and its anchorages with his novel Treasure Island where the story of Long John Silver is reputedly set.

Today, Norman Island offers one of the safest and most scenic harbors in the British Virgin Islands. No pirates to be found, but it is rumoured that treasure remains hidden all over. The 600-acre island also boasts numerous hiking trails and a scenic white sand beach, which is home to Pirates Bight restaurant and now Sail Caribbean Divers!

With a full range of PADI courses always available, you could even advance your diving credentials.

If you are a certified diver let us rendezvous with you on one of our custom dive boats. Our experienced instructors will guide you on a dive that you will be reminiscing about over your favorite grog on the beach of Pirates Restaurant.
