Kids And The Sea '08

Every year the British Virgin Island SCUBA Organization (BVISO) and the Kids And The Sea (KATS) get together to introduce local kids to the underwater world of scuba.

Tom, Megan and intern Anna were Sail Caribbean Divers contributors along with instructors from Aquaventures, Dive Tortola, Trimarine Boat Company and Paradise Watersports all joining forces to make this a very special day for all involved.

Held at Brewers Bay on the North shore of Tortola, twelve members of the KATS program took the plunge and participated in a Discover Scuba Dive. Derrylyn Churchwell, Marc Downing and Tom Gerker from KATS handled all the paperwork and provided a much appreciated after dive lunch. The kids were divided into groups of four and their primary instructor gave a short class encompassing the physics and physiology involved in diving, introduced the equipment and then proceeded to the ocean.

In the shallow water the students mastered some basic skills before heading out on a dive. The area was swarming with small silversides while every once in a while a large tarpon or snapper would make an appearance. Feather duster worms, hard and soft corals, anemones, butterfly fishes, angelfish, hamlets and sand divers were also sighted. A good time was had by all and each and every student said they would like to go on to become a certified diver.

Project AWARE International Clean up day 20th September 08

Sail Caribbean Divers would like to thank all of the volunteers who gave their support to the Project AWARE International Clean Up Day.  The increase of litter is one of the most detrimental impacts of tourism and Project AWARE strives to broaden the awareness of ecological damage on a worldwide scale. Part of this is the annual “splash for trash”.

One of natures little secrets, Cooper Island is an idyllic location. A quiet resort and a popular anchorage are all that are on this otherwise deserted island. Volunteers consisted of local BVI divers and members of the Youth Empowerment Project (YEP). YEP is a charitable organization that helps local kids from the East End of Tortola stay off the streets.   Sail Caribbean Divers and its parent company Sail Caribbean are dedicated supporters.

Fourteen divers tackled the mooring field and seven YEP kids attacked the beach. A gallant effort was made with over twenty large rubbish bags being collected. Interesting items included a large car tire and some poor, unfortunate persons iPod.

Many thanks for the effort by everybody, as every little helps.

BVI Air Show

On the 18th and 19th April the BVI Airports Authority put on the first annual BVI Air Show. This featured flying displays with amazing acrobats, helicopter rides and a sky diving display.

Sail Caribbean Divers were proud to sponsor Neil Perks of the Flight Adventures Skydiving Team (FAST). As part of a four man display team, they exited the aircraft at 7500 feet for a 30 second freefall. When the team deployed their chutes at 2500 feet, each jumper also deployed a number of sponsored flags attached to their legs. One of these being a Sail Caribbean Divers flag. All proceeds of this jump went to the Virgin Island Search and Rescue, whom Sail Caribbean Divers are dedicated supporters.

Over the last three years over thirty people have completed the internship program gaining valuable work experience within the dive industry.  Some of our interns are now working in the Caymans, Thailand, and Florida.

While this is not an offer of employment or IDC placement. It is, however, a unique first hand experience with the inner workings of a PADI 5 Star Dive Center. We are the only dive center in the BVI with a resident Course Director. Mike Rowe has been in the diving industry for over 20 years and has successfully qualified over 300 instructors.  Everyone dreams about it, you can be a part of it!
